New sci-fi movie Ad Astra is set to hit cinemas this month. Brad Pitt has received praise for his role, and even Oscar buzz since it was screened at the Venice Film Festival. Here is everything we know at Express.co.uk about the movie so far.

When is Ad Astra out in cinemas?

The film premiered at Venice Film Festival on August 29.

It will be released in the UK on September 18 and in the USA on September 20.

Most other countries will be able to see the film in late September, with release dates spread over a couple of weeks.

What is the plot of Ad Astra?

In Ad Astra, astronaut Roy McBride undertakes mission to travel to the outer edges of the solar system, to uncover the truth about his missing father and unravel a mystery which threatens the planet.

His father, played by Tommy Lee Jones, was part of a doomed expedition which, 30 years later, threatens the human race, and Roy is the only man to stop it.

With a space-based synopsis it’s expected the film will have some stunning visual and special effects.

Who is in the cast of Ad Astra?

Brad Pitt leads the cast as astronaut Roy McBride, while Tommy Lee Jones plays his father, Clifford, and Liv Tyler plays his wife Eve.

Alongside them are Ruth Negga as Helen Lantos and Donald Sutherland as Colonel Pruitt.

Supporting actors include Jamie Kennedy, John Finn, Kimberly Elise, Bobby Nish, LisaGay Hamilton, John Ortiz, Greg Bryk, Loren Dean, Donnie Keshawarz and Natasha Lyonne.

At present, their roles are not fully confirmed, as the film is still shrouded in mystery despite rave reviews.

What do critics think of Ad Astra?

Most reviews for Ad Astra have been very good, with the film achieving am 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Empire’s John Nugent said: “Ad Astra is a stunning, sensitive exploration of the space left by an absent parent – and the infinite void of actual space.”

But the film has also gained some three star reviews, meaning it could prove divisive when the general public get a chance to watch it.
