At the Toronto International Film Festival there are many movies set to get their premiere or second showing. And of these, many have already been tipped for Oscars. Here is a pick of 10 films to look out for in awards season.

Parasite

Parasite is a 2019 black comedy thriller film from Bong Joon-ho.

The film has had major critical acclaim after it won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and has already been selected as the South Korean entry for Best International Feature Film at the Oscars.

Films making the list will be announced next year, but this could be an early contender for Oscar glory.

Parasite is the story of jobless and penniless family who become involved with a wealthy and glamorous family, the Parks, to try and earn some money.

Parasite will hit UK cinemas on February 7, 2020

Pain and Glory

Another international film, Pain and Glory won two awards at the Cannes Film Festival: Best Actor for Antonio Banderas and Best Soundtrack.

The autobiographical film follows director Salvado Mallo, who is a version of real life Pedro Almodóvar, as it chronicles his life in flashback.

Other than its festival awards, Pain and Glory is also the Spanish selection for Best International Feature film and, if shortlisted, could go up against Parasite.

The Report

The Report, starring Adam Driver and Annette Being, follows real-life US Senate investigator Daniel J Jones, who led the investigation into the CIA’s use of torture in the wake of the September 11 attacks.

The film gained favourable reviews after it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January and is tipped for awards due to its real-life subject matter and Adam Driver’s performance.

The Report comes out in UK cinemas on November 15, before being released on Amazon Prime from the end of November

Harriet

This is the first film of the list so far which will have its premiere at TIFF.

Harriet is another real-life story, based on the tale of Harriet Tubman.

Harriet was a slave who escaped to become an abolitionist, and led hundreds of enslaved people to freedom through her extraordinary acts.

Cynthia Erivo is leading the cast, having risen to fame since her Tony Award-winning role in the musical of The Color Purple.

For this role she has also won an Emmy and a Grammy, meaning an Oscar to complete her EGOT collection of winning four of the most coveted Hollywood awards.

Jojo Rabbit

Director Taika Waititi’s latest film, Jojo Rabbit, will also have its premiere at TIFF.

The New Zealand director took the world by storm since his indie flicks like Boy and Hunt for the Wilderpeople, when he directed Marvel trump Thor: Ragnarok.

He will play an idiotic Hitler, the invisible friend of a young Hitler Youth who is forced to question his morals when his mother takes in a Jewish girl.

Phoenix will play the Joker, the Batman super villain in an origin story, seeing him as a failed stand up comedian who turns to a life of crime.

Many are suggesting this is the film for which Phoenix will win an Oscar, having been nominated three times before.

Joker comes out in UK cinemas on October 4

A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood

Another film to have its premiere at TIFF, A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood follows an award-winning cynical journalist who is forced to write an Esquire profile on beloved real-life TV icon Fred Rogers.

Fred Rogers is played by Tom Hanks, in what some are suggesting will be his next Oscar win, as well as a potential nomination for director Marielle Heller after her 2018 film Can You Ever Forgive Me? gained Oscar attention.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood will come out in cinemas on December 6
