There are few things scarier than a clown. Especially one with multiple rows of serrated teeth, a maniacal laugh and those red balloons. Except, it’s worse than that since Pennywise isn’t actually just a clown at all. He is an ancient alien entity simply called It who has been around for millions of years. He has been on Earth for millennia, feeding on fear and death every 27 years. Even if you killed the ‘clown’ manifestation won’t the evil force itself still exist? Won’t it just come back 27 years later in another form? WARNING: MAJOR IT CHAPTER TWO SPOILERS FROM HERE

The movies follow Stephen King’s remarkable source novel closely.

In the book, It has an equal and opposite force, Maturin, who is actually a space turtle. They are both part of the Macroverse.

It is composed of evil eldritch energy that also manifest in the deadlights Beverly saw as a child inside Pennywise.

Marturin shares with Bill, played by Jaden Lieberher and then James McAvoy in the movie, how to defeat their evil enemy. Only the Ritual of Chud can end It forever and combat the mind and soul-sucking energy of the deadlights.

As children, The Loser Club fight back against It once they are able to overcome their fears. Their use of silver hurts Pennywise because the children believe it can. Everything comes down to belief and courage. But they do not destroy Pennywise or It.

The novel ends with Bill once again leading the attack on Pennywise.

He carries out the Ritual of Chud again and goes inside It’s mind with Richie. After terrible struggles and the sacrifice of one of the Loser’s Club they eventually overpower It, find the entity’s ‘heart’ and destroy the evil alien creature once and for all. They also destroy the eggs It had laid.

This really is the end. It has been completely defeated and can never return, not now, not in 27 years, not ever.

So, why is director Andres Muschietti talking about potential sequels?

Has the movie changed the fundamental ending from the book?

Muschietti told iO9: “There is a whole mythology to the book. Mythology is something that always has opportunities to explore.

“It has been on Earth for millions of years. He’s been in contact with humans for hundreds of years, every 27 years. So you can imagine the amount of material.”

This is the perfect way to expand the cinematic It universe but remain true to the source material.

Fans might not have seen the last of Pennywise or some of the other terrifying incarnations of It.
