Jesus Is King is a phrase many would be used to hearing spoken at church. But in a new documentary, Kanye West is showcasing his faith and famed Sunday Service. Jesus Is King will also accompany West’s new album release.

What is Jesus Is King and what is it about?

The official release from IMAX said of the film: “Filmed in the summer of 2019, Jesus Is King brings Kanye West’s famed Sunday Service to life in the Roden Crater, visionary artist James Turrell’s never-before-seen installation in Arizona’s Painted Desert.

“This one-of-a-kind experience features songs arranged by West in the gospel tradition along with music from his new album Jesus Is King — all presented in the immersive sound and stunning clarity of IMAX.”

The film is, effectively, a concert film, but with a religious twist as it features songs and raps with a gospel message.

In the run up to the film’s release, West’s wife Kim Kardashian has taken to social media to share various information about the film, including excerpts from filming days.

Regularly, both she and her sisters, including Khloe Kardashian and Kendall Jenner, have posted videos and clips of Sunday Service, a gospel collective featuring Kanye West, performing gospel music in various venues.

From recording studios to outdoor arenas to deserts, the group have sung to huge audiences, and it seems likely these have acted as rehearsals for the final performance which was filmed in the Roden Crater and used for the film.

Jesus Is King is also accompanying film to the release of West’s new album of the same name.

West has played excerpts of his film at listening parties in Detroit and Chicago over the weekend, and it is expected to be both cinematic and Christian-centred.

When is Kanye West’s album Jesus Is King out?

The release date for West’s new album Jesus Is King has fluctuated, with him reportedly missing the release date three times already.

According to West’s wife, Kim Kardashian, the album was meant to be out on September 27, but has yet to be seen on shelves.
