Joker box office opening weekend: How much money did Joker make?

Joaquin Phoenix has impressed critics and fans, so much so that they are heading out to the cinema in their thousands. DC’s latest film follows outcast Arthur Fleck as he becomes Batman’s arch nemesis, The Joker. With some cinemas selling out on opening night, it’s likely to be a box office smash.

How much money has Joker made?

In its opening weekend in the USA, Joker made $93.5million, which is £75.8million.

That means it has topped the box office top 10 in America, beating out movies which have been out for at least a week.

Across the rest of the world, Joker has made $140.5million (£114million), meaning it has taken a total of $234million (£189.8million) in its opening weekend.

This is staggering and means it has already totally shattered box office records for October releases.

The previous October record belonged to Venom, the Spider-Man spin-off, which made $80million in its opening weekend, which is equal to £63.9million.

Joker’s huge things has also meant it has hugely surpassed its production budget, which was just $55million, or £44.6million, so its profit is already $179million, or £145.2million.

Is there going to be a Joker sequel?

With numbers this huge, it makes sense for fans to be wondering whether a second Joker film is in the works.

However, director Todd Phillips has sent mixed messages on this issue, and seems to be passing the buck to his star, Joaquin Phoenix.

Speaking to Total Film about whether Phoenix would consider reprising the role for upcoming DC movie The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson, Phillips said: “He said: “One thing I will tell you: I would do anything with Joaquin, any day of the week. There’s nobody like him.

“If he was willing to do it, and if people show up to this movie, and Warners came to us and said, ‘You know what? If you guys could think of something…’

“Well, I have a feeling that he and I could think of something pretty cool.”

This certainly suggests that if the film has done as well as theirs has, and has broken box office records and smashed through the budget, a Joker 2 could be in the works.

However, when he was pressed on a sequel by Variety, he said: “No, definitely not.

“Oddly, in the states, comic books are our Shakespeare it seems, and you can do many, many versions of Hamlet.

“There will be many more jokers, I’m sure, in the future.”

He added: “But the movie’s not set up to [have] a sequel. We always pitched it as one movie, and that’s it.”
