Deadpool 3: Writers 'waiting for word' from Marvel bosses for R-rated third movie
Deadpool 3 was been “promised” by writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick in a new interview as the pair were pressed for updates amid their current promo cycle for Zombieland: Double Tap.
Speaking to Den of Geek, Wernick revealed: “We’re just waiting for the word from on high.
“There’s a lot to be sorted out, like how Deadpool fits into the Marvel Universe with the other characters and into the release schedule of the MCU,” he admitted.
“Then it’s, do the X-Men get in there at some point? Fantastic Four?
“There’s a lot to be sorted out and I think we’re all getting a much needed rest from Deadpool – Ryan [Reynolds] and us and everybody.”
Reese added: “The promise is that there will be more Deadpool.”
He said Ryan’s character will continue to “live in the R-rated universe” they have created before further teasing the possible crossover with the MCU.
“Hopefully we’ll be allowed to play a little bit in the MCU sandbox as well,” he added.
The producer and screenwriter said he and his co-writer have “just got to land on the right idea” and then Deadpool 3 will be on.
“We just have to make it the right way,” he told the website.
With the Disney-Fox merger earlier this year, it looks likely Deadpool, X-Men and Fantastic Four will be in the MCU in the future.
However, Reese and Wernick also revealed the “transition” of Fox to Disney has “delayed” things as bosses try to work out where the MCU goes next.
Hollywood A-lister Reynolds, 42, is also incredibly busy with his other filming schedules, which won’t help when it comes to finding time to knuckle down with the next Deadpool.
Meanwhile, Reese and Wernick also told io9 they will continue to “trade texts” with Reynolds until they land on the perfect idea for the follow-up.
Elsewhere, Reynolds previously spoke out about the third Deadpool movie, saying the franchise will go in a “completely different direction”.
“Often, they reboot or change a character maybe like four movies too late,” he said at the premiere of Deadpool 2’s PG-13 version in China.
He previously hinted there might not be a third standalone Deadpool film.
Deadpool first hit screens in 2016 with its R-rated blend of superhero antics, fourth wall-breaking title character and dark humour.
The first movie grossed $783 million (£622 million) worldwide.
Deadpool 2 was released last year, grossing $785 million (£624 million).
