Queen Elizabeth II nearly caused international outrange with her outfit meeting the Pope
Queen Elizabeth II has met a number of Popes including Pope Jean Paul II and Pope Francis. However, an expert has revealed Her Majesty almost made a huge diplomatic blunder almost 20 years ago.
When meeting the Pope there is a lot of etiquette to follow, as is to be expected when meeting an institution thousands of years old.
The Queen might be the Monarch of Britain, but she is not the infallible representative of the Christian God on earth, as is believed by some.
As such, it is vital Her Majesty shows the utmost respect to the Pope when representing Britain internationally.
However, it has been revealed how the Queen almost failed to do this in a manner that would have proven catastrophic.
The Queen’s former royal dresser Angela Kelly has written a book about her time working with the Queen.

She revealed how she averted Elizabeth II from what could have been an international incident at the Vatican.
To meet with the Pope in this way women are required to dress very formally.
The rules are formal black clothing covering knees, upper arms, back and chest. Women are also required to earn black closed-toe shoes with low heels and a veil.
Angela, writing in her new book The Other Side Of The Coin: The Queen, The Dresser And The Wardrobe, revealed the near miss took place in 2008 when the Queen met Jean Paul II.

The Queen was advised she could wear a day dress, but this was not the case, as Angela knew – being Catholic. She brought along a black dress in case, which the Queen wore when her private secretaries were informed of the dress code.
Angela writes in her book: “I vividly remember the brief look of relief on the Queen’s face.”
For the event the Queen wore a black dress with an intricate floral lace design on the top half.
The gown had a high neckline and long sleeves. It also, unsurprisingly, had a long skirt. As is the norm when meeting the pope, the Queen wore a veil, like Melania Trump did when meeting the Pope.

Interestingly, had the Queen been the monarch of a Catholic country she would have been entitled to wear to white to meet the Pope.
She wore a three string pearl necklace and pearl and diamond earrings, which granddaughter-in-law Kate Middleton has borrowed.
On her breast was the huge diamond and pearl Richmond Brooch, worn with it’s large pearl pendant.
The Queen has worn the huge piece on a number of occasions an it was a wedding gift given to Princess Victoria Mary of Teck.
On her wrist the Queen wore a huge piece made of diamonds and pearls, the Queen Mary’s pearl and diamond floral bracelet. It has five strands of pearls and the clasp is an enormous flower. Each of the five petals of the flower has a large central diamond surrounded by several smaller diamonds.
The royal line of succession – who outranks who?
The line of succession to the British throne dictates the order in which each member of the Royal Family would ascend to the throne.
It is also seen as a ranking of importance with the head of the line, the Queen, taking the place of ruler.
Older children come before younger children. Traditionally boys came before girls, but this law was changed on 26 March 2015 before the birth of Prince William’s first child.
Incredibly, Catholics are still excluded from the line of succession, as are children born outside of wedlock.
The royals, who usually stick to a strict protocol when appearing in public, often arrive at events in ascending order of importance, with the most important royal arriving last.
Prince Charles, 70, is currently second-in-line to the British throne, followed by Prince William, 37, his oldest son.
Then comes Prince William’s children, George, five, Charlotte, three, and Louis, almost one, and they are followed by Prince Harry, 34. Prince Harry is succeeded by his son Archie Harrison, born in May.
