Frozen 2: HUGE change for Elsa in Disney movie explained – Here's why directors did it

Frozen 2 will see the return of Disney’s beloved characters Elsa (voiced by Idina Menzel) and Anna (Kristen Bell) along with the rest of the gang, Kristoff (Jonathan Groff), Olaf (Josh Gad) and Sven the reindeer. This time around, the Queen of Arendelle and her sister will be on a mission to save the kingdom as the tone looks set to get darker. One big change since the first movie is the outfits the leading women are wearing.

Frozen 2 trailers and teasers show Elsa and Anna breaking down barriers by wearing leggings, not just gowns.

While it’s not the first time Disney princesses have worn trousers, it is rare to see them in anything other than traditionally feminine attire.

Director Jennifer Lee has explained the decision to have Elsa and Anna branching out, saying the move towards practical clothing represented contemporary attitudes.

“The princesses are all things; they’re all times; they’re all outfits,” she told the LA Times.

“Everyone sort of represents when the film was made and that the film’s trying to show.

“These two women I’m proud of, they are carrying the weight of the kingdom on their shoulders, so they’re going to wear what’s right for that. And I love that you can wear anything,” she added.

In the past, Mulan wore trousers during her time disguised as a male soldier and Jasmine wore harem pants in Aladdin.

In the first Frozen, however, despite its progressive themes, Elsa and Anna remained firmly in the lane of dress-clad Disney heroines.

It seems, with all the action the pair are to face in the sequel, comfortable attire is a sensible choice.

Meanwhile, after she embraced her magical powers and transformed in Frozen, coming to terms with her identity, Elsa is set for further development in the new movie.

Footage from the trailers shows the Queen of Arendelle ditching her signature fishtail plait for a loose style.

Having moved from a stiff, coiffed up ‘do in the beginning of the first film — while she was still confined by trying to be someone she wasn’t — to the sophisticated plait, now fans will get to see Elsa breaking out further as her wild locks fall free down her back, symbolic of her growing character.

One major move fans have been speculating about since the release of Frozen in 2013 is whether or not Elsa will be getting a girlfriend in the sequel.

Anna star Bell recently responded to rumours cryptically after a fan called for a same-sex romance for the character, simply replying: “Hmmmm….”

Menzel previously told ET she thought enthusiasm around the idea of Elsa being gay was “great”, saying: “Disney’s just gotta contend with that. I’ll let them figure that out.”

However, Frozen bosses have insisted the point of Frozen is not for the characters to be defined by romance, with songwriter Kristen Anderson-Lopez telling IGN: “Like the first movie, Elsa is not just defined by a romantic interest.
