are considering several candidates after making the decision to sack Unai Emery at the end of November and while Red Bull Leipzig manager Julian Nagelsmann is on their shortlist the 32-year-old appears to favour a move to Barcelona.

Nagelsmann impressed during his managerial debut with Hoffenheim, and left the Bundesliga club in ninth place after his three-year stint with the club.

And he has made a great start to life at RB Leipzig, who currently sit second in the league after 14 games and are only one point off leaders Borussia Monchengladbach.

But in a recent interview with German television broadcaster ZDF, the young manager admitted that while his long-term goal is to be the manger of Barcelona, there are also other clubs which he is interested in too.

“I’ve said many times: Barcelona is a beautiful city, a beautiful club,” he told ZDF .

“But they are not the only club that is attractive.”

Nagelsmann also spoke about turning down the position at Borussia Dortmund because the timing wasn’t right.

“It’s true there was interest there,” he said.

“In football, timing and fit is always the key, and it just did not fit, so I didn’t go there.

“The time did not fit and BVB did not want to wait. I was at Hoffenheim under contract, there was a clause – I could only leave in 2019. When that clause took effect, there was no position free in Dortmund.

“I had very good talks with Leipzig. I felt that the club really wanted me.”

After Emery was shown the door Freddie Ljungberg was promoted from his role as assistant coach and put in temporary charge of the team.

And it is understood the north London club have already begun the process of interview candidates for the role.

There are several out of work managers who have been linked with the vacant position at the club, with Massimiliano Allegri and Mauricio Pochettino featuring on their shortlist.

However, it has been reported that Arsenal are also looking at former players, with Mikel Arteta and Patrick Vieira also being considered.

But while the process of finding a new manager is a priority, Arsenal director Josh Kroenke has insisted the club would be taking its time to appoint Emery’s replacement.

“It’s about finding the right candidate, not the first candidate,” he said.

As a result Arsenal may stick with Ljungberg for the remainder of the season if they believed they will need to wait until the summer to be able to secure their preferred candidate.

The Gunners, who currently sit 11th in the table, take on West Ham tonight and know a win at the London Stadium would see them return to the top half of the league.

However, Arsenal are winless in nine straight games, while the Hammers come into the game off a midweek 2-0 loss to Wolves.
