Wonder Woman 1984 will see Gal Gadot return to the big screen as Wonder Woman. This time, however, she has left war time USA and has lived a life through the 1980s, but is still as glamorous and kick-ass as ever. However, the new trailer revealed the return of Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor and fans are wondering one thing: how is he still alive?

How is Steve Trevor still alive in Wonder Woman 1984?

Steve Trevor (played by Chris Pine) had made a thoroughly welcome return to the DCEU in Wonder Woman 1984.

Fans will remember he first met Diana in the 2017 Wonder Woman, when the US pilot’s plane crashed off the coast of Themyscira, the Amazonian island where Diana lived.

He was interrogated with the Lasso of Hestia (or the Lasso of Truth) and revealed he was a spy in the war, which eventually led Diana to go to earth to try and defeat the God of War, who she believed was plaguing the earth.

After they defeated Ares in an epic battle, Diana continued fighting in the war, though she had lost her lover in the desperate fight to bring peace to the earth.

Fast forward to 1984, we hear Diana speaking to Kristen Wiig’s Barbara, where she says: “My life hasn’t been what you probably think it has. We all have our struggles.”

Asked if she has ever been in love, Diana replies: “A long, long time ago.”

Clearly she is referring to Steve, and low and behold, Steve arrives in the movie, looking dishevelled and having no sense of what the future is like.

One theory is that he is sent into the future by an unknown force, or perhaps an evil force which is attempting to distract Diana.

The film’s director, Patty Jenkins, opened up on this fact to Cinemablend, saying: “I can’t tell you [how he is alive], but here’s what I will say: We didn’t put Steve Trevor in this movie because we just wanted to put Steve Trevor in this movie.

“When we thought of the story for this film while we were making the first film, a Eureka moment came and it couldn’t have been told without Chris Pine playing Steve Trevor. So I promise you, it’s not a gimmick.

“It’s integral to the story. It’s incredibly important that we had him, and we just super enjoyed it. It was great having Chris back, but it’s also important to the story that I can’t wait for you to see.”

Clearly, Diana’s love interest is important, and in the end their roles seem to flip around, where she is teaching him the ways of the world when, in the first film, it was he who had to help her fit in.

Another character, Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal) could also be a key to the story, as his TV adverts featured in the trailer suggest he is selling something which will only lead to chaos.

He says: “Welcome to the future. Life is good, but it can be better.

“Why shouldn’t it be? All you need is to want it. Think about having everything you always wanted.”

Later in the trailer, after Diana has shown off her fighting skills in various locations, she is heard saying: “Nothing good is born from lies and greatness is not what you think.”

It may be this advertiser is trying to sell something the world can’t offer: time, allowing people to bring back those they have loved from the past to help move on from bereavements and loss.

Another key to the story could also be Barbara, who will also become Cheetah, Wonder Woman’s arch nemesis in the comics.

She is an archaeologist, so it may be that, due to her jealousy of Diana, she finds a way to bring back Steve to taunt her foe, before being tempted by Maxwell Lord herself.

In the film, she is seen looking longingly at Diana, as if jealous of her beauty, before she herself spruces up and has clearly been changed.

Perhaps she is the author of Steve Trevor’s return, as a way to distract her foe before pouncing.

One thing is for sure – fans will have to wait until the film comes out to be sure.

Wonder Woman 1984 is out in cinemas on June 5, 2020
