In March last year the young actor was rushed to hospital after a shocking accident on the set of the new Maze Runner movie.

Production was supsended for months after it emerged that his injuries coudl have been life-threatening. One report after the accident on March 28, 2016, claimed that the actor had “fractured either his cheekbone or orbital socket.” Others reported that he had broken multiple bones in his entire body.

Hollywood producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura has been working with O’Brien on his new movie American Assassin and revealed: “I never saw him in his worst form, but it was described to me. It was really scary.

“He came close to dying, I’m pretty sure. It was enough to shake your core.”

Now the actor, himself, has opened up about what he went through.

O’Brien is currently promoting America Assassin and revealed he feared he might never act again.

He told Vulture magazine: “I really was in a dark place there for a while and it wasn’t an easy journey back. There was a time there where I didn’t know if I would ever do it (work) again..and that thought scared me, too.”

The young star also revealed that he suffered panic attacks when he tried to get back into his usual routine and get his body back together.

He added: “I had lost a lot of function, just in my daily routine. I wasn’t even at a point where I felt like I could handle social situations, let alone showing up and being responsible for work every day.

“Long hours on set, delivering a performance and carrying a movie… it just makes your palms sweat.”

His new movie American Assassin also reflects a darker, more gritty side of the O’Brien, which may shock some of his teenage fans.

In the powerful action thriller, O’Brien plays a man whose fiancée is killed while the couple is on vacation. Driven to seek revenge, he is recruited for black ops training.

The actor was able to draw on his own experiences to portray a man battling grief and anger and discovering his darker side.

O’Brien said: “I learned a lot about myself through this whole process in general, from what I was coming off of. And then kind of pushing myself to do this film. I felt like I grew up a lot doing this movie and in the last year.”
