UK snow forecast: Charts show snow batter Britain as powerful Atlantic storms sweep in

Snow is expected to hit some parts of northern Scotland this week, according to the latest weather charts, as powerful Atlantic systems sweep across the UK. The strong weather systems could bring wind speeds of up to 70mph for some parts of the country, with the Met Office issuing weather warnings for wind. According to the latest weather forecast charts, there is a high chance of some snow for northwest Scotland, especially over higher ground, on Wednesday.

The Netweather chart, which looks at the risk of snowfall, shows a high chance of the white stuff hitting once again in the same area on Thursday evening.

WxCharts also suggest an increased chance of snowfall in northwest Scotland on Wednesday as bitterly cold air moves in.

BBC Weather forecaster Ben Rich also warned of snow over higher ground in the north of the country this week, as powerful weather systems barrel across Britain.

He said: “There are lots of weather fronts waiting out in the Atlantic, but they are currently behind held off by this area of high pressure – keeping things largely dry for many of us through Sunday.

“A brisk southwesterly wind is delivering a lot of cloud which will be producing the odd spot of rain or drizzle across hills, and slightly more persistent rain from this system across Scotland.”

Moving into the start of the week, the BBC Weather forecaster warned: “The area of high pressure that has been protecting us from these frontal systems slips away and this weather front will work in from the Atlantic”.

He added: “We will see some outbreaks of some pretty heavy rain tracking eastwards during Monday, brisk winds along the line of this frontal system.

“The rain not really getting into East Anglia, or the South East, until after nightfall, and behind that rain band, temporarily just a little bit drier.”

The BBC Weather forecaster warned the settled conditions would not last.

He said: “As we go into Tuesday, a strong and powerful jet stream blowing across the Atlantic is going to spin up a deep area of low pressure, just to the northwest of the British Isles.

“While the centre of the low will stay a long way from our shores, you can see on the southern flank a lot of isobars squashing together.

“It is going to be very windy, very wet for some, but also, really mild.

“Will see some outbreaks of heavy rain, most especially across Scotland, Northern Ireland, parts of northern England.”

There will still be some showers around, some of those showers wintry over high ground in Scotland

BBC Weather forecaster Ben Rich

Wind speeds threaten to reach a staggering 70mph in Scotland, as the system crashes into the country.

Later in the week on Wednesday, a cold front is expected to push across the country, increasing the likelihood of some wintry weather.

Rich said: “Wednesday is our chance to draw breath. Our window of drier weather, with some spells of sunshine. There will still be some showers around, some of those showers wintry over high ground in Scotland because of that slightly cooler air, but behind me comes our next frontal system. Another area of low pressure spinning up, which is going to head our way.

“At this stage, this one doesn’t look like being quite as windy, but it will be blustery out there. There will be some outbreaks of rain, perhaps some snow for a time over high ground in Scotland, as some cold air tries to mix its way in from the north.

The Met Office currently has two yellow wind warnings in place on Tuesday with powerful gusts and heavy rain expected to hit the country.

The warnings, in place northwest Scotland, northeast England and southwest Scotland, reads: “Strong southwesterly winds are expected for parts of Scotland and northern England on Tuesday.

“Gusts of 50-60 mph are likely, with 70-75 mph gusts around some of the most exposed coastal and upland sites.”

The Met Office outlook for Tuesday to Thursday reads: “Rain and very strong winds in the northwest on Tuesday, clearing southeastwards to brighter, cooler and more showery conditions.

“Staying cloudier further south with some rain; strong winds possible Thursday.”

The Met Office long-range forecast from Friday January 10 to Sunday January 19 warns “it will turn drier and brighter for a time across the UK at the start of this period, but further ahead the southeast should see the best of any settled conditions with light winds and drier, brighter periods and sunny spells possible at times.”

The forecast adds: “Rain is still possible for the south, but is likely to be short lived in comparison to the north.

“Generally staying unsettled across the northwest with spells of locally heavy rain and strengthening winds interspersed with scattered showers, which could turn to snow over high ground.”

It comes as leading bookmakers have slashed odds on this month to go down as the wettest January on record with storms forecast.

Coral’s John Hill said: “With heavy downpours set to fall over the next few days, it is no surprise that the odds have been slashed on this month ending as the wettest January on record.

“We have been knocked over with punters backing 2020 to be the wettest year ever which could be an indication that we are set for a damp 12 months ahead”.
