Deepika Padukone birthday: 'Death threat' shock as xXx Bollywood star reveals daring role

Last year was a huge twelve months for the xXx actress as she cemented her position as the highest-paid actress in Bollywood. But Deepika also stepped up to become one of the most outspoken stars in the business, lobbying for social change and even berating other actors who neglected their social responsibility. It has made her a target for extreme right-wing groups and social conservatives. However, this time, it is an extreme fan who is making horrifying threats.

It’s not the first time such shocking threats have surrounded the actress.

At the end of 2017, Suraj Pal Amu, a highly-placed member of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), offered a reward for the murder of Deepika.  Members of hyper-conservative group Rajput Karni Sena also offered a $1.5 million bounty for the beheading of the actress.

Extreme Hindu nationalists were enraged by her film Padmaavat, a historical epic about a 14th-century queen of legendary beauty, claiming it depicted her having an affair with a Muslim invader.

The film did no such thing but its release was postponed for months during the ensuing social and political backlash and banned in certain states.

Chaturvedi replied directly to the comment on his Instagram page.

He wrote: “What can I do? Let me romance her, then you can kill me. As it is, I’ll die in happiness while I’m romancing her.”

The untitled film is a romantic drama from director Shakun Batra and expected to hit cinemas on Valentine’s Day 2021.  

Meanwhile, Deepika has a remarkable array of movies coming out before that in 2020.
