Avengers Endgame: Original Iron Man death scene details are HORRIFIC
Avengers Endgame featured some pretty impressive visual effects, so it’s unsurprising that it’s made the short-list ahead of the Academy Awards nominations this year. But did you know that Iron Man’s death scene was meant to be even more gruesome? In fact, he almost looked like Batman villain Two-Face.
Weta Digital VFX supervisor Matt Aitken told Insider: “We gave the filmmakers a full range [of looks] to choose from.
“And one of those was where the energy from the stones had acted right up into his face and popped one of his eyeballs out and it was hanging out on his cheek.
“They didn’t go for that one.”
While Marvel VFX producer Jen Underdahl spoke of the Batman villain disfigurement.

Batman villain Two-Face
They said: “We did do a Two-Face version where you got inside and you saw the sinews and you saw them in the teeth and that.”
However, on why they didn’t go for it, the producer added: “It takes you away from this really powerful moment
“You don’t want to be focusing on that or grossed out.”
Aitken said: “When he’s collapsing against the tree stump, you’ve got to know that he’s in a really bad predicament, that he has made this terrible sacrifice.
Did you see Tony Stark’s death coming?
He added: “But then you also didn’t want it to distract from his performance.
“And it’s a really subtle performance that he has in those intimate moments with Spidey and then with Pepper.
“So yeah we definitely worked quite hard on achieving that one, but we got there.”

Screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely told Vanity Fair: “We realized over the course of the movies, that Cap and Tony were on crossing arcs.
“Cap, who had started as completely selfless and was jumping on grenades willy-nilly, was becoming more self-interested.
“Not to say selfish, but if you watch Civil War, particularly, he’s making decisions based on what he wants, even if it breaks up the Avengers.
“And Tony started as the brash billionaire playboy, and the stakes are growing for him, the responsibility’s growing for him.”
They added: “We realized at one point, late in 2015, that for Steve to be his best self, he was going to have to get a life and for Tony to be his best self, he might have to lose his.”
On why Tony Stark had to actually die and not just retire, the writers said that it would always mean the possibility of Iron Man 4. And as much as some fans would want that, sometimes it’s good to quit while you’re ahead.
Markus said: “It needs an end or it loses meaning. The end is what cements the thing, to actually sew it together and bring it to a crescendo, and yeah, take people off the board, finish their arcs.
“If Tony made it out the other side, and Iron Man 4 was waiting there, you’d be like, [shakes head] One too many…”
