Every year, hundreds of movies are filmed all over the UK, by Brit filmmakers along with many from elsewhere. The film world is brimming with talent and gorgeous locations to choose from. But it turns out in recent research exclusively shared with Express.co.uk, one of the top five locations is a BIG surprise.

Where are the most popular filming locations in the UK?

According to research revealed exclusively to Express.co.uk by Jurys Inn hotels after they trawled more than 5000 IMDB entries, there is very little surprise on which city in the UK is the top filming location.

That’s right, our capital city of London is the top filming locations for movies, with it being home to 1,008 movie locations.

It has ten times as many listings as anywhere else in the UK, but the city is used in a variety of different ways.

In movies such as Spider-Man: Far From Home, and much of the later Harry Potter movies, London is shown off in all its glory, with the Houses of Parliament, Tower Bridge and the River Thames being key spots for filming.

Other spots included the SIS Headquarters and the Vauxhall Crossing, both of which were used in James Bond movies Skyfall, Golden Eye and Die Another Day.

Many film productions also take place in Pinewood Studios, which is situated on the cusp of the London border with Slough, including a number of the Marvel movies such as Guardians of the Galaxy.

The second most popular filming location on the list will come as a surprise to many: it is the small, Hertfordshire town of Borehamwood.

The town is a commuter town between Watford and London, and while very little would seem particularly exciting about this town, it houses one of the most famous film studios in the world: Elstree Studios.

At Elstree Studios, mega blockbusters such as The Shining, Indiana Jones and The King’s Speech have been filmed, as well as Kick-Ass, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and many of the Star Wars movies.

However, it also produces TV series such as The Crown, EastEnders, Strictly Come Dancing and Big Brother.

The city which is third on the list of most popular filming locations is Dublin, which, while not in the UK, is a major player in the film production scene.

The Kilmainham Gaol Museum is a place of particular interest, which served as part of the set for Paddington 2 and The Italian Job.

Next on the list if Oxford, the gorgeous historic city which is home to one of the oldest universities in the world.

In Oxford, the Bodleian Library has served in productions such as The History Boys, while the university buildings and the Divinity School have been the set for a huge number of productions.

These have included the Harry Potter movies, which used the Divinity School, while X-Men first Class, An Education and The Golden Compass were all at least part-set in the university.

The fifth most popular movie location in the UK is Glasgow, one of the largest cities in Scotland.

A surprising movie to have been shot by the Kingston Bridge is Fast & Furious: Hobbs and Shaw, which used this area for one of its major stunts.

Other movies which filmed in Glasgow include Trainspotting, though it is technically set in Edinburgh; Cloud Atlas and World War Z, which was also partially shot in Malta and other areas of Scotland.

Other cities and town which are in the Top 20 locations include Manchester, Cambridge, Bristol, Hatfield – for the famous Hatfield House, Belfast and Brighton – which has seen its beach feature in a huge number of films.
