Kate Middleton: What title will Duchess of Cambridge have once Prince George is King?

Kate Middleton and Prince William wed in a lavish ceremony held at Westminster Abbey in 2011, upon marriage they became the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Together they have three children, Prince George, six, Princess Charlotte, four, and Prince Louis, one. Their eldest son, Prince George is third in line to the British throne, so it is very likely that the young Prince will one day inherit the throne from his father, and upon doing so, what will happen to Kate? Will she have a new title and role to play?

When Prince William rises to the British throne, the Duchess of Cambridge will be elevated to the title of Queen Consort, the wife of the King, more likely to be referred to as Queen.

When the title is given to the wife of a ruling King, she would be required to take part in her own coronation celebration to honour the title.

In this role, Kate would have the same social status as the king but will not have the same political power.

The Royal Family website said: “Unless decided otherwise, a Queen Consort is crowned with the King, in a similar but simpler ceremony.

“If the new Sovereign is a Queen, her consort is not crowned or anointed at the coronation ceremony.”

The Duchess – who is already a working member of the Royal Family – would also be given additional responsibilities to what she has now.

She will be required to support the Sovereign with his duties, as well as official engagements, but also be required to engage in extensive charity work – and be the head of charities – another thing she will be responsible for the contribution of the modernisation of the monarchy.

However, it’s very likely that Prince George will someday also become the King of Britain and once that occurs Kate’s title would change again.

The Duchess of Cambridge would be named the Queen Mother, however, this would only happen if she is the widow of a King.

As the new monarch is usually crowned when the ruling parent dies, Kate would get the title if George took the throne in her lifetime.

Even though Kate’s title would change, her role and responsibilities would not be much different.

The Queen Mother has the same duties as the Queen Consort and she would stay as one of the most senior members of the Royal Family.

The mother of Queen Elizabeth II was the last Queen Mother in the UK, and she held the title for an impressive 50 years.

Although the world knows that Prince George may one day be King, previously it was reported that the Cambridge children aren’t aware of their royal fate.

This is because the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge wanted to keep their childhoods as “normal” as possible.

William has even previously spoken out about his family, where he too described them as “very normal”, and stated that there was a time and a place to tell George he will be King – making it seem that right now, the Cambridge children are not aware of their royal position.

Talking to the BBC in April 2016, the future king said: “As far as we are concerned, within our family unit, we are a normal family.”

The dad-of-three continued to explain that they are waiting for the time is right to tell George that he will one day be a king.

He explained: “I love my children in the same way any father does, and I hope George loves me the same any son does to his father. We are very normal in that sense.

“There’ll be a time and a place to bring George up and understand how he fits in, in the world. But right now it’s just a case of keeping a secure, stable environment around him and showing as much love as I can as a father.”

In contrast, William found out about his royal title as a child. Previously, Jeremy Paxman recalled how Princess Diana would often talk about how William didn’t really want to be king.

Talking on Paxman on the Queen’s Children, he said: “We talked about our children and she [Diana] said William often told her that he didn’t really want to be king, and then Harry would say ‘If you don’t want the job I’ll have it.'”
