The runner has asked their neighbours to refrain from cooking with their windows open, as the smell of meat is “offensive”. The vegan has also asked for the community to grill vegetables on their BBQs, and not meat. It was also suggested people “might want to do some research about the plant-based diet and join the vegan movement”.

The runner’s message, posted on Twitter by “Best of Nextdoor”, an account dedicated to neighbour-on-neighbour pettiness, has been retweeted 1,200 times and liked 10,000 times.

The vegan wrote: “Please close your windows when cooking meat! As a vegan runner, it is hard for me this time of year when the weather starts warming up and folks start opening their windows.

“Several nights a week I am out running around dinnertime and when people have their windows open I can smell what they are cooking.

“I have noticed a sharp uptick recently in smells of folks cooking meat and it can be quite overpowering.

“Quite honestly, the odour is offensive and I am hoping our community can have some empathy for its #plantbased members by closing their windows if they are cooking meat and only putting vegetables on their bbq.

“I do not want to be a stereotype, so I will not go into detail on why the door of cooking animals is offensive.

However, even some vegans have mocked the request, with one tweeting: “I am a vegan and I oppose this message. Respect other people’s cultures and decisions.”

The Vegan Society’s formal definition of veganism is: “Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose.”

Vegans avoid all animal foods such as meat, dairy, eggs and honey.

They also refrain from using animal derived products like leather; and, as far as possible, products tested on animals.

The number of vegans in Britain has doubled twice in the past four years.

Not only has it become a popular diet, but it has become a popular lifestyle.
