David Bowie film: Daniel Radcliffe shuts down biopic AND slams own acting skills

David Bowie is next to get the movie biopic treatment, but while this project – titled Stardust – has already been filmed with Johnny Flynn in the lead, playing the famous singer is also Daniel Radcliffe’s dream. Fans of Harry Potter will next be seeing the British favourite in Escape from Pretoria. Radcliffe gave an interview with Fox News about his new movie, a tense prison caper that sees the actor plunged into a totally different role than anyone has seen him in before.

During the chat, Radcliffe was also asked about musical films, and who he’d like to play in the future.

“If you’re talking like dream thing,” he mused to the publication. “Who would it be fun to play and which songs it would be great to sing, then I suppose it’d be David Bowie.

“But I’m not actually submitting myself for that,” he said quickly.

“I don’t think I’d be good,” Radcliffe continued, showing a lack of faith in his own acting prowess.

“And I certainly think there are people that’d be better.”

The actor went on to say he doesn’t even think the biopic would be a good idea, suggesting too many have been made already.

“And also, we don’t need to make a film about everyone’s life,” he declared.

The star later mused there would be an intense level of pressure in trying to embody his own hero.

“If it was a musician that I loved as well, there would also be this sort of twin pressure of – I don’t want to screw up a movie about my favourite musician.”

Stardust is an upcoming British drama about Bowie’s creation of his alter-ego Ziggy Stardust.

The film tells the story of Bowie’s first visit to the US in 1971, and shows the singer’s origins as well, culminating in how he brings his persona to life.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, successful star Flynn admitted he didn’t want to be put forward for the role at first.

“I said no to being considered because I just thought it was dangerous territory,” he said.

“There are biographical films that I really love — but mostly they’re [the ones] that are just about a moment in time…

“I wasn’t so into the Bohemian Rhapsody, Rocketman – type of biopic for David, because he’s so many things that I don’t think one person could carry all of that stuff. It could be patronising to his legacy.”

Going on to shed light on the film, Flynn shared: “For the first time he’s in America… playing hotel lobbies and weird parties.

“There are pictures of that time and he looks nervous and a bit depressed and anxious. And he was wearing this Mr. Fish — the kind of dress that Mick Jagger wore in the 1969 Hyde Park concert after Brian Jones died.

“I think he was trying to be a SoHo, kind of the street hippy… he’s singing weird novelty songs. ‘Space Oddity’ is the only hit he’s had, but even he thinks that’s just crazy.

“He tried so hard to make it already, but everything’s failed, and there’s a desperation there… You listen to radio interviews from that tour, and he’s this really fragile artist.

“He thinks of himself as a bit of a failure at this point,” the star added.
