The film was expected to begin filming this summer, although a lot has changed since then.

First off, director Stephen Spielberg decided only to act as a “hands-on” producer, with James Mangold in talks to take over.

Mangold is known for his major features such as Ford v Ferrari, Logan and Walk the Line.

However, earlier this month, it was announced the film’s release date would be postponed to June 2022, most likely because the coronavirus has caused delays to filming schedules in many industry productions.

This means, with a couple of years before the film is expected to come out, fans can definitely fit in the previous movies in the franchise to get up to speed.

In terms of film order, the Indiana Jones series is very misleading, as the movies are not released in chronological order.

Here is the list of how the films were released:

Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)

The first film, Raiders of the Lost Ark, came out in 1981 and saw the American archaeologist Indiana Jones be enlisted by the government to track down the Ark of the Covenant in order to stop it falling into the hands of the Nazis.

The film is set in 1936 and is followed by the 1984 film Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

Many people are not aware of this, but the second film is actually a prequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark and takes place one year earlier than the first film.

In Temple of Doom, which is set in 1935, Jones is asked by desperate villagers to find a mystical stone and rescue their children from a cult practicing child slavery, black magic and ritualistic human sacrifice in India.

This film was then followed by Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade in 1989, which is set in 1938 and follows Jones as he goes in search of his father, who is a scholar researching the Holy Grail before he is kidnapped by the Nazis.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

The final film in the series so far, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, was released some time after The Last Crusade, in 2008.

The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was set some time later, in 1957, against a Cold War backdrop.

Here is the chronological order the films can be enjoyed in:

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)

Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is on BBC One at 6.35pm tonight (April 11) so those who wish to watch the film chronologically can enjoy this as a way to start their film plan.
