Dolly Parton Jolene lyrics: Who is Jolene in country song? TRUE story
Speaking to NPR in 2008, Parton said: “One night, I was on stage, and there was this beautiful little girl — she was probably eight years old at the time.
“And she had this beautiful red hair, this beautiful skin, these beautiful green eyes, and she was looking up at me, holding, you know, for an autograph.
“I said, ‘Well, you’re the prettiest little thing I ever saw. So what is your name?’
“And she said, ‘Jolene.’ And I said, ‘Jolene. Jolene. Jolene. Jolene.’
“I said, ‘That is pretty. That sounds like a song. I’m going to write a song about that.'”
This may be the genesis of the original song, however, the story of Jolene is from a darker place than this innocent meeting.
Instead, the song is about a woman who Parton noticed was interested in her husband.
At Glastonbury 2014, where Parton headlined, she told the crowd the story of Jolene.
Parton, however, was not to be put out by Jolene’s advances, and in her Glastonbury set, continued: “I want you folks to know, though, that something good can come from anything.
“Had it not been for that woman I would never have written ‘Jolene’ and I wouldn’t have made all that money, so thank you, Jolene.”
No matter what has happened in her past, Parton is always ready with some Nashville sass.
As well as that, Parton will always make sure her fans know the inside scoop on all her love life.
