The actor, also known as The Rock, stars in the hit film – which topped the US box office over the weekend.

Based on the classic video game of the same name, it stars Johnson as Davis Okoye, who teams up with an albino silverback gorilla called George in a bid to halt a monster invasion.

Johnson has revealed that he loved the script from the first time he read it, but he had one very important element that he wanted changing: the ending.

“So the script comes in, and I’m reading it,” he told Rolling Stone. “And at the end of it – George dies!

“I’m like, ‘No. Did I miss something? George can’t be dead’. But I go back, and yeah.”

He added that the shock ending became a big factor in his discussions with the director, Peyton Reed, and the producers.

“I don’t like a sad ending. Life brings that s**t – I don’t want it in my movies,” he argued.

“When the credits roll, I want to feel great. George sacrifices himself like a brave soldier. OK. But this is a movie!

“There’s a crocodile the size of a football stadium – we’re not making Saving Private Ryan.”

The star said that it came down to a case of him having to say, “You’re gonna have to find another actor”.

Rampage is out now.
