Met Gala 2018: Princess Beatrice follows in Princess Diana's footsteps in purple gown

Princess Beatrice, 29, cut a surprising figure among Hollywood stars at the Met Gala 2018, representing the British royal family at the high profile New York event.

By attending the event, Princess Beatrice followed in footsteps of the late Princess Diana, who attended the event herself back in 1995.

The Met Gala, held annually at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, is a chance for celebrities to showcase their most zany, creative fashion looks.

The theme this year was Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination – and stars put their own interpretation on the theme, from best dressed to worst dressed.

But what did Princess Beatrice choose to wear for the occasion? She chose to play it safe in a floor length purple gown.

The gown, made from a taffeta material, had balloon sleeves which exposed her arms underneath, and the rest of her figure was covered up.

The high neckline was beaded in silver sequins which were appropriate for the glamourous nature of the occasion.

The deep purple shade of the dress flattered Beatrice’s colouring, including her auburn hair and blue eyes.

She wore her hair in a half up half down style which was parted in the middle, with a gold head band on top. 

Taking a style cue from the late Princess Diana, Princess Beatrice’s outfit looked demure compared to some of the more outlandish fashions at the event.

Diana also went for a more low key look, wearing a navy blue floor length slip dress for her own Met Gala appearance.

The dress had a black lace design around the neck, and black lace detail on the side.

Princess Diana also wore a pearl, diamond and sapphire choker to mark her out as royalty at the event.
