Solo A Star Wars Story: Anthony Daniels is NOT playing C-3PO – but he IS in the movie

Daniels has famously appeared in every single Star Wars film as C-3PO, and last week Mark Hamill let slip on a podcast that he’s back in Solo.

But now, the writer of the film has clarified that – while he is in the cast – he’s not playing the gold-plated droid.

“Anthony Daniels is in the movie as a different character,” Jonathan Kasdan told Uproxx.

“In the Papillon type offshoot story, the Wookiee that helps them escape, Chewbacca’s best friend, is played by Anthony Daniels – and beckons him to join them as they escape on a different ship.”

When the interviewer noted how strange it will be to not see C-3PO and R2-D2 in a Star Wars film, Lawrence Kasdan added: “There are a lot of things about this movie that are different from all the others.”

Hamill had previously told The Washington Post’s soundtrack: “Tony Daniels is happy because he’s in every single Star Wars movie.

“Every single one: all the prequels, he’s in Rogue One, he’s in Solo… oops, I hope that’s not [a secret].

“But anyway, he’s in every single Star Wars movie, that’s not such a reveal, Star Wars fans expect him to be in every movie.

“I said to Tony, ‘it’s perfect, you never age, and if you give them enough trouble they’ll just sign somebody else that fits in that suit!’”

Solo is out later this month and has had encouraging buzz following its LA premiere.

The film stars Alden Ehrenreich in the role of Han Solo – the part previously made iconic by Harrison Ford in the original trilogy.

He’s joined by Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, plus Emelia Clarke, Woody Harrelson, Thandie Newton and Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

Ron Howard has directed the film, after Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were famously removed from production during the filming process.

Solo: A Star Wars Story is out on May 24.
