And in true modern Princess style, Ms Markle went against predictability and took her own fashionable route.

Whilst choosing Givenchy, a famously French couture house, Ms Markle opted for their new British in house Artistic Director, Clair Waight Keller. She was previously at Chloe and Pringle of Scotland and took over as the first female Artistic Director at Givenchy last year.

After meeting Ms Waight Keller in early 2018, Ms.Markle chose to work with her for her timeless and elegant aesthetic.

The dress encompasses the minimal elegance of the iconic House of Givenchy and showcases the expert craftsmanship of the world renowned Paris couture atelier, founded in 1952.

Givenchy is the perfect choice, as a designer which excels in minimalism without any compromise on luxury.

The beauty of this dress is its simplicity.

The main focus of the dress is it’s open bateau neckline, constructed from six meticulously placed seams to create a sculpted silhouette.

Ms Waight Keller extensively researched mills throughout Europe to create an exclusive double bonded silk cady, a fabric that was specifically made to achieve a round sculptural look.

The classic fifties neckline draws the eye to Ms Markle’s décolletage and the bracelet length sleeves complete the minimal contemporary silhouette – encapsulating the style of Grace Kelly.

The dress falls into a graceful A-line skirt and the lines extend towards the back where the train flows in soft round folds cushioned by an underskirt of triple silk organza leading into the stunning train.

The showstopper today was definitely the hand embroidered, five metre veil that delicately contrasted with the clean lines of the dress.

Ms Markle expressed the wish of having all 53 countries of the commonwealth on her journey with her through the ceremony and Ms Waight Keller did this by embroidering the flora of each Commonwealth country into the silk tulle veil.

David Emanuel, who designed Diana, Princess of Wales’s dress for her wedding to the Prince of Wales in 1981, said of Meghan Markle’s outfit: “The bride is simplicity herself.”

He added: “The dress is as I predicted – simple, stylish, elegant and understated.

“I think the story is in the silk jewelled veil – it encompasses all the Commonwealth flowers, which I think is very clever.”

Ms Markle kept her accessories minimal to let the art deco tiara be the focal point with galanterie diamond and white gold Cartier earrings, and matching cuff.

Her wedding shoes were based on an original Givenchy refined, pointed couture design made of a silk duchess satin, the perfect accompaniment to the purity of the dress only further enhancing the modernity of the entire look.

The dress was of course in true Meghan style, we were always going to expect big things from a woman who has honed such a chic, minimal style, untouched by faddish trends and has even made the critical/ scrutinous Fashion forward sit up and take notice.
