Deadpool 2: The truth behind THAT end credits scene – ‘It was Ryan Reynolds’ idea’

WARNING: Spoilers ahead for Deadpool 2.

In the first credits sequence, Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) uses Cable’s time travel device to save Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) and Peter W (Rob Delaney).

In the second, he visits the battle between Wolverine and the X-Men: Origins version of himself – and kills the latter.

Then, in the third, he visits Reynolds – back when he was deciding to take the lead role in 2011’s Green Lantern film. Reynolds-as-Deadpool shoots Reynolds-as-Reynolds.

Explaining the scenes, screenwriter Rhett Reese told The Hollywood Reporter that the latter two credits moments were Reynolds’ idea.

“When Ryan hooked into it, he just thought, ‘Well I have to go change some personal events from my life.’ Meaning Wolverine and Green Lantern,’” he said.

“It is a little subversive in that it kind of undercuts the actual movie itself. ‘Forget everything you just saw! Vanessa is alive again, Peter is alive again!’

“But at the same time, I think it fits with the Deadpool tone.”

He added: “I don’t think we’ve had a joke more meta than Ryan Reynolds killing Ryan Reynolds.

“I guess you could have said when Deadpool shot Ryan Reynolds, he himself should have disappeared.

“But that said, we’re not paying too close attention to time travel logic, because we don’t do that here.”

So long story short, viewers can presumably just enjoy the entertainment value of the post-credits scenes without wondering about what they mean for the future of the Deadpool franchise.

The film opened strongly at the box office in both the US and UK, in addition to multiple other markets worldwide.
