Maleficent II is the sequel to Disney’s 2014 Maleficent, filmed at UK’s Pinewood Studios and in locations across the UK.

The first film amassed $758.5 million overall worldwide back in 2014 on a budget of $180 million – becoming the fourth highest-grossing film that year.

Lead Angelina Jolie actually hinted at the possibility of a sequel just a week after Maleficent’s debut.

The sequel was officially confirmed she would reprise her role in 2016.

Who is starring in Disney’s Maleficent II?

The original film saw Angeline Jolie as the eponymous Sleeping Beauty villain and Elle Fanning as Princess Aurora.

Maleficent II will see both these actresses returning to reprise their role for the sequel.

Alongside Jolie and Fanning, Michelle Pfeiffer is joining as Queen Ingrith, adding another Disney title to her belt as she is also set to appear in Ant Man and The Wasp.

Chiwetel Ejiofor, Ed Skrein, and Robert Lindsay also join Maleficent II and Harris Dickinson will take up the mantle of Prince Charming.

Other actors reprising their roles from the 2014 original Maleficent are Sam Riley as Diaval, and the pixies: Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple, and Lesley Manville.

According to Disney, Maleficent grossed more than £565.6 million ($750m) at the global box office.

Joachim Rønning will direct Maleficent II, with a script co-written by Linda Woolverton, Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster.

Maleficent II producers are Joe Roth, who produced the first Maleficent and Alice through the Looking Glass, and the movie’s star Angelina Jolie.

It added: “Maleficent II continues to explore the complex relationship between the horned fairy and the soon to be Queen, as they form new alliances and face new adversaries in their struggle to protect the moors and the magical creatures that reside within.”

If the first Maleficent movie is anything to go by, big box office figures are possible, though critics were less kind.

Maleficent has an aggregated 51percent on Rotten Tomatoes and a 56 tally on Metacritic indicating mixed or average reviews.
