Star Wars: Han Solo movie SINKING at box office in second weekend forecast

The movie opened at No1 in the US over the Memorial Day Weekend last week, but with a much weaker lead than had been expected.

Although its total domestic bow – just over $100m for four days – was very strong by many film’s standards, it sparked huge concern considering the sci-fi adventure’s astronomical budget, and the numbers the Star Wars franchise can usually pull in.

Now, in its second frame, Variety reports that its income is set to drop right down to $28 million.

That’s far lower than previous spin-off Rogue One: A Star Wars Story managed in its own sophomore weekend ($64 million) back in December 2016.

Still, $28 million should be enough to keep it at No1, at least – with Deadpool 2 its closest competition, pacing towards $20 million in its third week on release.

Shawnee Woodley-fronted drama Adrift is reportedly racing for third place (around $10 million) against Avengers: Infinity War, which is on its fifth week.

Ron Howard, who directed Solo, had spoken out last week about the movie’s perceived disappointing box office performance.

Someone posted on Twitter: “I heard the movie isn’t soaring too high in the box office. Should I watch it today to help out?”

Howard found the tweet and wrote: “Didn’t meet projections but amounts to a new personal best.

“Check #SoloAStarWarsStory for balanced feedback & then C it on a big screen!”

Alden Ehrenreich plays Han in the movie, and reportedly has a three-movie clause in his contract.

Whether he’ll be brought back for a direct sequel to this film remains to be seen, although its ending certainly left several threads very much unresolved.

It’s also been claimed that Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-offs are in the works.
