Warnings are in place for rip currents, high waves and strong winds along the southwestern Mexico coastline this week.

Huge gusts of 93mph (150kph) have been recorded by Mexico’s weather service as Bud heads northwest at 9.3mph (15 kph).

The eye of the storm was centred at around 200 miles southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico at 5am PDT on Monday (1pm BST), according to The Weather Channel.

Meteorologists said the hurricane could still be as big as a tropical storm when it approaches Baja California, which borders the US and sits near to San Diego.

Bud has been forecast to hit populated areas, such as the Los Cabos region, on Thursday or Friday.

Coastal areas such as Jalisco to Guerrero could see extra rainfall and thunderstorms as the storms gets nearer to the coast during the middle of the week.

People living in Manzanillo, Tecomán and Colola will remain on high alert for flash flooding until at least Wednesday.

Small rivers and streams may rise out of their banks and turn into deadly torrents.

Rough seas and dangerous rip currents will threaten beaches from Acapulco to Mazatian, along with southern Baja California.

However, the storm will stay well away from these areas.

Bud comes a week after Storm Aletta quickly reached hurricane status last Thursday, after starting as a tropical depression south of Mexico on Tuesday night.

By Friday morning, Aleta had turned into a major hurricane and reached Category 4 hurricane status in only a few hours.

It has now dropped back to tropical storm status.

The storm will track west-northwest during this week, well south of the Mexico coastline as it starts to disappear.

AccuWeather Meteorologist Courtney Spamer said: ”Bud is likely to strengthen as we go through the early part of the week as it travels over the same warm waters that Aletta just went through.”

However, the track of the storm should be the same as Aletta.

Spamer added: “Instead of curving westward, Bud could continue its northward track toward the Baja Peninsula of Mexico.

“Although weakening would be likely, this track could send tropical moisture into the southwestern United States late this week.”
