Star Wars: Guess which actress almost played Padme Amidala in prequel trilogy?

Of course the role ultimately went to Natalie Portman, but Sherlock star Vinette Robinson has said the part was actually her own first ever audition.

Robinson played Sgt Sally Donovan in Sherlock, and may also be recognisable from The A Word, Morgan, Death In Paradise and Black Mirror.

“I remember my first ever audition was for Star Wars for the Natalie Portman character, hilariously,” she told The Two Shot Podcast.

Robinson recalled feeling like her Yorkshire accent would hold her back, opting to try on a crisp RP accent for George Lucas’s team.

“I didn’t know what to do and I was really nervous and I felt like I had to talk really proper, like I tried to talk properly,” she said.

Portman was just 15 when she got the coveted part, and starred in The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith.

She has gone on to land an Oscar for her role in Black Swan, and she’s also graced the MCU in Thor and its sequel, Thor: The Dark World.

Speculation is now abound that she will reprise the role of Jane Foster in next year’s Avengers 4.

The Star Wars prequels came before LucasFilm was taken over by Disney, and the newest era of intergalactic movies kicked off.

The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, plus spin-off Rogue One, have collectively made billions at the worldwide box office, but recent release Solo: A Star Wars Story has had more difficulty.

It is projected to be the first Star Wars film released by Disney to make a financial loss, having suffered from a poorly-executed marketing campaign.

As it stands, no further spin-offs are officially diarised, although Rian Johnson and the Game of Thrones TV showrunners are producing two separate new trilogies.

Plus, Episode 9 – the conclusion to the so-called Skywalker Saga – will be out in 2019.

Robinson, meanwhile, can next be seen in the darkly comic movie Ilkley alongside Sir Derek Jacobi and Anna Maxwell Martin.
