Top Gun 2 release date: When is Top Gun sequel out? Cast, trailer and plot

Tom Cruise is back as Maverick in the Top Gun sequel, aptly titled Top Gun: Maverick.

The sequel was confirmed by Cruise via Twitter on May 31 to the delight of Top Gun fans and action movie buffs all around.

When is the Top Gun sequel out?

Top Gun: Maverick is scheduled for release on Friday, July 12, 2019, so fans still have a year to wait.

Development of the sequel started in 2010 when Paramount Pictures approached Jerry Bruckheimer and Tony Scott to make the second Top Gun movie.

Top Gun: Maverick production officially began on May 30, 2018, in San Diego, California.

Who is in the cast of Top Gun: Maverick?

The confirmed cast is, so far, slim.

Tom Cruise is reprising his role as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, with the pilot now flying an F/A-18 Super Hornet.

Val Kilmer also returned to take up the role of Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, Maverick’s rival in the first Top Gun movie.

Kilmer was ready for a sequel long before Top Gun 2 was officially announced, and his return to the franchise was widely anticipated.

Miles Teller was recently cast as Bradley Bradshaw the son of Nick “Goose” Bradshaw.

Goose met his end during the first Top Gun movie and although Anthony Edwards petitioned, humorously, for a “Ghost Goose” to be included in the sequel, nothing has been confirmed.

Kelly McGillis, who played Cruise’s love interest in the first movie, has not been confirmed as returning, though she told the Independent in 2014 she would be happy to cameo.

What is the plot of Top Gun: Maverick?

Skydance CEO David Ellison confirmed the plot of Top Gun: Maverick to Collider.

“It is very much a world we live in today where it’s drone technology and fifth generation fighters.”

He added: “It’s really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today.”

As of yet, there’s no trailer to speak of yet, but a likely date for one will be November or December 2018.
