‘I feel sorry for Theresa May!’ Ed Miliband blasts PM over UK-US trade deal
Mr Miliband was one of the thousands of anti-Trump protesters marching through London yesterday.
Appearing on BBC Newsnight, he said he was protesting the US President’s “values, racism, misogyny, respect for authoritarian regimes and apparent contempt for a democratic regime.”
The former Labour leader, who led the party from 2010-2015, said if he was in the Prime Minister’s shoes he “would have done things a different way.”
He said: “I would not have rushed to the White House at the first opportunity.
“I am afraid it has not really got her anything.
“I almost felt sorry for her in that press conference because it was classic Trump.
“He lied, he attacked the press and he made appalling remarks about immigration and its effects on Europe.
“For my liking she was too passive, she has been too passive.”
Speaking at a joint press conference at the Prime Minister’s official country retreat, Trump said a US-UK trade deal “will absolutely be possible”.
However, he made his comments just days after he told The Sun Mrs May’s Brexit plan could kill an agreement.
Speaking after talks at Chequers, Trump said the US-UK relationship is “the highest level of special”, while Mrs May said they had discussed plans for an “ambitious” trade agreement.
But Mr Miliband said: “I think this US trade deal is a mirage.
“I don’t think it’s going to happen.
“I think if it did happen, the impact would be marginal, and actually, I don’t think we want to buy the American chlorinated chicken.”
He added: “If anything is proved by today, it’s that Donald Trump is an unreliable ally.
“If we care about the institutions of the UN, the EU and Nato, we can’t just cut ourselves off, we’ve got to remain closely aligned with the European Union.”
The MP for Doncaster North also insisted Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn would have taken a tougher line with Donald Trump compared with Mrs May.
During the protest, he said: “The guy is a liar who just makes things up and when he’s caught out he just lies even more.
“I’m afraid the problem with Theresa May is right from the beginning she has embraced in thinking he’ll do us a favour.
“He has done us no favours at all because the guy doesn’t respect weakness.”
Asked whether Jeremy Corbyn would have taken the US President to task, Mr Miliband replied: “Absolutely”.
