Peyton Reed finally spilt the beans on the mid-credit scene which left fans gasping in the cinema.

Warning: Spoilers for Ant-Man and the Wasp below.

Speaking to Uproxx about the movie and the mid-credit scene in particular, Reed explained his reasoning behind framing the moment as he did.

Reed wanted to approach the whole Snap turning half the world’s population to dust in a very ‘Ant Man’ way.

Especially knowing fans had the outcome of Infinity War in the forefront of their mind and what it meant for the future of Marvel.

Reed told Uproxx: “I think everybody in the back of their minds’ are like, ‘okay, they can’t ignore it, they can’t ignore it’.

“What’s going to happen and who is it going to happen to? So we wanted to just have fun with that.

“And for me, you’re not going to do the event in a bigger way than Infinity War did it. It had to be its own different tone and it had to be specific to our movie.”

The tone of the mid-credit scene was a punch in the gut to many Ant-Man fans.

The mid-credits scene shows Scott, Hope, Janet, and Hank reunited and appear to be conducting some sort of experiment involving the Quantum Realm.

Ant-Man is meant to collect particles from the Quantum Realm, though the reason why remains unspecified.

After Scott shrinks down to his ant size, Hope, Janet, and Hank wait, but eventually, they lose contact with Scott.

When he comes back on the communication device the point of view changes to Scott.

The audience sees him collecting particles from the Quantum Realm, but when he attempts to contact the rest of his team he gets radio silence.

Then, the point of view shifts back to the real world Hope, Janet, and Hank are reduced to piles of dust.

Fans shouldn’t be too concerned about their fates, given it seems highly probably Thanos’ snap will be in some way reversed.

But for fans who were sitting in the cinema to watch the mid-credit scene, it felt like the beginning of the end.

Ant-Man and the Wasp is in UK cinemas Thursday, August 2, 2018.
