Mammia Mia 2: When is it out in cinemas in the UK? Latest reviews and verdicts
Mamma Mia 2, aptly titled Here We Go Again, had its world premiere on July 16.
General audiences will be able to see the Abba musical on July 20, 2018.
But how did Mamma Mia 2 stand up to its predecessor? The reviews are in.
Most reviews came in with three or four stars out of five, landing the sequel with mostly positive comments.
BBC culture calls it cinematic candy floss, but this isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
“Anyone who adored Mamma Mia! The Movie will be delighted by the way she turns Here We Go Again into a glitter-strewn karaoke party,” Nicholas Barber wrote.
“But it’s the cheerful fun of the flashbacks which make it bearable to the rest of us.”
Like the BBC, Digital Spy also gave Mamma Mia Here We Go Again three out of five stars.
“Mamma Mia! doesn’t attempt to be anything more than mindless fluff. That was always its charm – it was never going to win an Oscar.
“So for those expecting more of the same, you will not be disappointed.”
What reviews all seem to agree on is Cher’s presence lifting the movie onto a whole other stratosphere.
Being slightly more generous, Den of Geek gave the sequel four stars and lavished praise upon it.
“A gleefully charming and welcomingly opened arms reunion that will delight fans in the same way as seeing your favourite school teachers perform end of year panto together, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again will have you reaching for the nearest pair of dungarees and power platforms boots.”
The Los Angeles times called Mamma Mia 2 a rare kind of sequel “so unexpectedly enchanting that it plays less like a rehash than a reclamation.”
So far, Mamma Mia 2 has an 85 percent positive rating on the aggregating website Rotten Tomatoes which is a vast improvement on its predecessor’s 54 percent.
With the official release date only another day away, that rating is sure to change as more reviewers head to the cinema for the Abba-themed movie.
But die-hard fans of Mamma Mia will undoubtedly fall in love with the sequel for Christine Baranski’s humour (which Empire called ‘crackling’) Meryl Streep’s cameo ballad, and of course, those quintessential platform boots.
Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again is in cinemas Friday, July 20 2018.
