How to swerve trouble if you are driving abroad

Most Britons know they need a valid driving licence, personal ID, and proof of insurance, but are less clued-up when it comes to surprising road rules in popular holiday destinations.

For example, just 7 per cent know that Spanish law insists that you carry an extra pair of glasses, according to research from Sainsbury’s Bank.

Only 15 per cent are aware that in France you are required to have a breathalyser kit in your car at all times.

Karen Hogg, head of insurance at Sainsbury’s, said the first step is to check whether you are covered for overseas motoring. “Ask your insurer whether you have comprehensive cover abroad and if required, upgrade your policy to include this,” she said.

You should also consider extending your motor breakdown cover, although one in four prefers to take a chance.

Then find out exactly what equipment you need to comply with local motoring laws.

“This might include anything from a first-aid kit to a warning triangle and will differ from country to country,” Hogg added.

First-aid kits are compulsory in Austria, France and Germany, while reflective jackets for everyone in the car, headlamp beam deflectors, a warning triangle and possibly a fire extinguisher are often obligatory.

Hogg added: “Checks will help minimise the risk of breakdowns too, for example, check tyre pressures, oil and water levels.”
