Supergirl movie: Will Supergirl have her OWN movie thanks to Warner Brothers?

DC comics and Warner Brothers have, for a long time, struggled with success at the box office.

Despite Henry Cavill’s performance as Superman, the first Superman movie was not a box office success, nor were the further Warner Brothers outings of the Justice League and Superman v Batman.

Now, Warner Bros may have cracked what it needs for a boost at the box office: women.

After the success of Wonder Woman, WB is eyeing another female superhero.

Yes is the answer, women rejoice!

Deadline today reported a feature film based around Supergirl is confirmed to be in development by Warner Bros and DC.

Supergirl is the heroine and cousin of Superman, who escaped the planet Krypton as a teenager (while Superman was an infant).

Supergirl’s screenwriter is Oren Uziel, whose credits include 22 Jump Street and The Cloverfield Paradox, and is currently writing and directing the Netflix movie Shimmer Lake.

A producer for the movie is yet to have a producer named, but Supergirl is rumoured to be part of Warner Bros and DC beginning to create a new template for future Superman movies.

Whether this means a Superman cameo in the Supergirl movie or a brand new Superman making his first outing in a post-credit scene is yet to be confirmed.

WB’s executive Walter Hamada has a huge slate of upcoming DC-based movies.

They include Shazam!, the Margot Robbie starring female-lead Birds of Prey, and the standalone The Joker origin movie starring Joaquin Phoenix.

All of these DC comics movies are in addition to Aquaman and The Flash, and next year’s Wonder Woman 1984, the sequel to the smash success directed by Patty Jenkins starring Gal Gadot.

While Supergirl may be a stranger to the big screen, her small screen success is well documented.

The CW’s series starring Melissa Benoist is heading into its fourth season and has been lauded by critics and fans alike.

For her movie outing, no actress has been named yet as Supergirl.

Neither has a director been named, but many are imagining the hunt will start, and end, with a slew of female directors, given the female-centred superhero.

Supergirl has yet to be given a release date.
