The Fifth Element 2: Original director Luc Besson speaks out on sequel (EXCLUSIVE)
Now 20-years-old, the Bruce Willis and Milla Jovovich sci-fi film has become something of a cult classic.
At the time of its release, the movie completely split critics, being hailed as both the best and worst summer blockbuster of 1997.
Now as director Besson prepares to release his latest futuristic sci-fi film, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, fans are wondering if he would be up for making a sequel to The Fifth Element.
Express.co.uk caught up with the filmmaker in the Winner’s Room of the Empire Awards, where he collected the gong for Empire Inspiration.
When asked about The Fifth Element 2, Besson at first gave a blunt “no”, before being reminded of comments he made about a spin-off set in the same universe.
He said: “Ah, that’s not the same.”
“I don’t know I’m not thinking…I love my freedom to be able to think and go where I want to go.
“I’m like the pollen from the flowers at Spring. I follow the wind.”
We also asked the iconic director what he had planned for his next film, but he didn’t want to think about it until Valerian was out the way.
He added: “Let’s finish this one I have because, y’know, I still have two months of work so can’t think of anything else other than finishing this thing.
“I feel like a mother, eight months and a half [pregnant], ready to deliver in two weeks.”
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets will be released on August 4, 2017.
