Two hours and 17 minutes is a long time to keep an audience’s attention, but reviews so far indicate A Star Is Born manages the feat.

A Star Is Born tells the story of seasoned musician Jackson Maine discovering — and falling in love with — struggling artist Ally.

The official synopsis continues: “She has just about given up on her dream to make it big as a singer until Jackson coaxes her into the spotlight.

“But even as Ally’s career takes off, the personal side of their relationship is breaking down, as Jackson fights an ongoing battle with his own internal demons.”

For two hours and 17 minutes, this love story needs to both resonate with audiences and keep their attention held raptly.

Variety wrote: “A total emotional knockout, but it’s also a movie that gets you to believe, at every step, in the complicated rapture of the story it’s telling.”

A Star Is Born is not a new tale, though Cooper’s adaptation has certainly introduced it to a new generation of fans.

The original movie came out in 1937 and was subsequently adapted into a musical starring Judy Garland and James Mason in 1954.

Then, in 1976, A Star Is Born was made into a rock musical with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson in the leads.

Despite Streisand’s powerful voice and acting talents, the 70s remake holds 31 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Cooper’s directing talents have clearly been proven in his debut.

The movie took only 42 days to film, but Cooper spent three years preparing for the project.
