Aladdin live-action movie fan BACKLASH: The BIG issues Disney has faced with their remake
“People have a right to be upset about Naomi Scott being cast. They’re upset that their representation was taken away, and rightly so,” said one person on Twitter at the time.
But apart from these casting controversies, Disney has to tread carefully around the 1992 animated film’s stereotypes, according to Vox.
The outlet says the first Aladdin originally had a song lyric that described the Agrabah residents as violent, but still has one that calls the land “barbaric”.
Meanwhile, the original Aladdin myth, which has no source before French writer Antoine Galland’s 18th-century translation of 1001 Nights, is claimed to have been set in China.
However, Galland said he heard the tale firsthand from a Syrian, which may be why the setting was moved to the Middle East by Western storytellers, including Hollywood.
But despite the past and present controversy surrounding the live-action remake of Aladdin, perhaps Disney can pull off a culturally sensitive rendition of the classic tale without pandering to stereotypes?
If the latest trailer is anything to go by, this hopefully will be the case.
Aladdin is released in UK cinemas on May 24, 2019.
