Aquaman location: Where was the Aquaman movie filmed?

James Wan, the director of Warner Bros Aquaman, had a unique challenge ahead of him. Aquaman, as its name implies, takes place mostly underwater, as the titular hero is the king of Atlantis. CGI has come a long way in modern movies, with films taking place in a variety of fantastical locations – from Middle Earth to Mars. So where was Aquaman filmed?

Creating a world realistic enough but also visually engaging was only one of the feats Wan had to accomplish.

In May 2017, principal photography for Aquaman began in Australia.

A majority of the movie was shot at Village Roadshow Studios in Gold Coast, Queensland, with some filming also completed in Newfoundland, Canada.

For the scenes in the film which take place in the Sahara desert, various parts of Morocco were used.

Specifically, the Morrocan cities of cities of Merzouga and Erfoud were used.

The fight scene, which takes place in Sicily and you can watch in an extended trailer for Aquaman above, was filmed in Sicily.

Many other Australian Gold Coast locations were used for filming, including Main Beach, Coomera, Southport and Amity Point in North Stradbroke Island, Queensland.

During August 2017, Aquaman began filming on the Arthur Curry Lighthouse set at Hastings Point, New South Wales.

The lighthouse-home of Arthur and his father is located in the town of Amnesty Bay, Maine in the movie and the original DC Comics, but was filmed in Australia.

Speaking to Heat Vision, Wan said: “It’s a very technically challenging shoot to be on.

“Working with water, and even the dry-for-wet sequences are very complex.

“Our equivalent of two people sitting around chatting in the underwater world is super complicated.

“You have to think about CG with the hair, and how their clothing moves, how are they floating, what kind of rig we put them on and all that stuff. “

But Wan did not want to rely on CGI to accomplish anything a real actor could do.

Wan said his commitment to this “makes it very difficult and time-sucking and time-challenging to do all of this.”

“It’s not an easy shoot — but hopefully it will pay off in spades down the line.”

Given the positive response from fans and critics, Wan’s work indeed paid off in spades.

With a sequel highly likely, Australia may see the return of Aquaman to its shores.
