Jason Momoa has brought his charm, talent, and draw to the Warner Bros DC Comics slate. When Aquaman was first announced, the studio was under the microscope. WB has not been known for its superhero movies, unlike its major competitor Marvel. With Aquaman, however, they hoped to change all that.

What do critics say about Aquaman?

Perhaps surprising audiences, critics are already writing up rave reviews of the underwater flick.

Though already low expectations may have helped the movie, whose female stars include Amber Heard and Nicole Kidman, reviews are generally positive.

After the flop adaptation of DC Comics Justice League and Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice, Aquaman hoped to hit on some of the success garnered by Wonder Woman.

And it seems the movie has.

Germaine Lussier of Gizmodo called it a “big, fun, wild ride.”

Writing for Den n of Geek, Mike Cecchini said the movie “leans hard into its ’80s fantasy/adventure movie vibe.”

IGN movies podcast host Tom Jorgensen called Aquaman: “The best DC movie since The Dark Knight,” (though Wonder Woman fans may have a bone to pick with him).

He praised the director, James Wan, in particular, adding: “He delivers a swashbuckling epic full of big emotion, gorgeous undersea visuals, exciting action, and lots of laughs.

“WB should be handing the DCEU reins to James Wan, he’s proven he can, ahem, right the ship.”

It is worth noting that full reviews won’t make their way online until December 11, ten days before the movie’s UK release.

These impressions come from Twitter, which isn’t known for its nuance.

Slashfilm’s editor Peter Sciretta took to Twitter to say the Aquaman movie was “better than expected.”

Sciretta also compared the WB flick to its major competitor, writing: “It feels like a Marvel phase one movie, in a good way.

“It’s at its best when it’s having fun and not taking itself too seriously.

“Black Manta is great villain that comic book fans will love.

“Some truly spectacular one shots and good action,” he added.

Like Jorgensen, Sciretta also praised Wan and simultaneously took a swipe at Zack Snyder.

He wrote: “A lot of the aspects I didn’t like can probably be traced back to decisions Snyder made that were inherited by Wan (casting, chemistry between Heard/Mamoa…etc).”

You’ll have to wait for full reviews for another two weeks.

Aquaman is out in cinemas on December 21, 2018.
