Avengers Endgame box office: Fight for Avatar's record makes Zoe Saldana the REAL winner
Among its records, it is the UK and Ireland’s biggest opening ever with an astronomical £43.7 million.
Its global bow was a phenomenal $1.2 billion – the first movie ever to top $1 billion in a single weekend.
After a matter of days on the market, it is already the 18th most successful movie of all time, already overtaking the likes of Minions, Captain America: Civil War and Aquaman.
It now needs to top $2.79 million to overthrow Avatar and become the most successful film ever.
If it succeeds, or even it doesn’t quite make it, it’ll be fantastic news for Zoe Saldana in particular.
WARNING: A mild – and somewhat obvious – spoiler for Avengers: Endgame ahead.
It’s not a massive surprise, given her previous comments and social media posts, to say that Saldana appears in Avengers: Endgame as Gamora, despite being thrown to her death in Avengers: Infinity War.
Her involvement puts her in a very unique position.
Saldana also stars in Avatar, which came out in 2009. So if Endgame eclipses it, she will be a key player in the two top films of all time.
In fact, assuming Endgame makes it into the Top 5 (thus throwing out Jurassic World), she will feature in no less than three of the five highest-earning motion pictures in history.
As things stand, she’s in two of the Top 5 (Avengers: Infinity War and Avatar), as is co-star Chris Pratt (Avengers: Infinity War and Jurassic World). But Pratt’s tally won’t rise to three, at least not on this occasion – as Endgame will push Jurassic World out.
Multiple Marvel movies are in the top tier of all-time releases: The Avengers (2012) is at No6 with $1.52 billion, and Avengers: Age of Ultron is No8 with $1.41 billion.
The highest-grossing Marvel solo movie is Black Panther, in ninth on the all-time list (1.35 billion).
Iron Man 3 is in 17th, Captain America: Civil War is 20th, Captain Marvel is 24th (and still rising), and Spider-Man: Homecoming is 59th. The two Guardians of the Galaxy movies are in the Top 100, too.
Other non-Marvel movies near the very top of the heap are Titanic in 2nd ($2.19 billion), Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 3rd ($2.07 billion) and Furious 7 in seventh ($1.52 billion).
Avengers: Endgame is out now.
