Avengers Endgame: ‘Captain America WON’T sacrifice himself’ for one very important reason
Avengers: Endgame is out in just a matter of weeks – and still, Marvel have released very little in terms of specific plot details. After the Snap at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, we know we’ll join the few survivors as they come to terms with their grief. But then what?
Chris Evans – who plays Steve Rogers – has made no secret of the fact that his Marvel days are coming to an end.
The likes of Spider-Man, King T’Challa, Doctor Strange, Scarlet Witch and multiple Guardians of the Galaxy all turned to dust at the end of Infinity War, but many of them – unlike Cap – are already confirmed to be getting more films. So the question is how do they return, and how does Evans’ hero exit?
Many have assumed he will sacrifice himself in the process of bringing the fallen heroes back – which would certainly align well with his character, given one of the first things we saw him do back in Captain America: The First Avenger was jump on a grenade.
But a new theory has argued that Steve sacrificing himself is unlikely to happen – because it’s just too obvious.
User CaptainCayden2077 wrote: “This is the end of a twenty-one film run, the final film of a massive arc, the first film in all of film history to connect this many movies into a single franchise and a single ending, the climax of ten years of the Avengers, and I’m being told to believe that Steve is going to be given the opportunity to make such a simple choice?
“The Avengers are desperate. There are no more easy choices. They’ve made the easy choices. They lost because of that.
“People say that the term ‘endgame’ refers to the final stage in a chess game- where a player sacrifices some of his pieces in order to eliminate some of the opposing player’s pieces, where knights and bishops and rooks are less valuable than they were in earlier stages, where pawns become key pieces, and everything ultimately leads the opponent into checkmate.
“If this reference has something to do with the film, if sacrifice continues to be a large part of Endgame as it was in Infinity War, there’s no way I can believe that the circumstances of these characters will be so simple that Steve can choose to trade his life.”
They added: “I don’t know about anyone else, but I was absolutely shocked when Thanos snapped and I saw so many heroes get Decimated…
“I know what you might say about that ending, Spider-Man has a sequel, Black Panther has one, Doctor Strange does too, so it was all for nothing and boring. I wasn’t bored.
“Marvel and the Russos did what no one expected. Everyone thought Tony and Cap would die, or that many, if not all, of the original Avengers would, and Endgame would be about the new Avengers leading a path. The complete opposite happened.
“Again, I don’t know about anyone else, but I did not expect that. I guarantee, Marvel will do the same.”

Avengers: Endgame will be heavily marketed in the coming weeks, and rumours suggest tickets will go on pre-sale tomorrow.
After this film, focus turns to Spider-Man: Far From Home; out in July.
Avengers: Endgame is out on April 25 in the UK.
