Avengers Endgame: Details of Robert Downey Jr Iron Man return in Black Widow REVEALED?
Over the weekend, Deadline casually shared the news that despite completing his role as Iron Man in Avengers Endgame’s epic death scene, Robert Downey Jr will return as Tony Stark for Black Widow. Released next year, Scarlett Johansson’s solo movie is a prequel set between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers Infinity War. But now it’s come to light that this role could, in fact, be included thanks to a deleted scene from Civil War. After all, it would seem quite odd for Downey Jr to come back as Iron Man so soon.
According to Comic Book, the Captain America: Civil War scene was screened at multiple public events, but isn’t included in the special features of the home release.
The outlet reports: “In this scene, Black Widow and Iron Man have one final confrontation after the final battle with Winter Soldier and Iron Man, echoing their earlier argument when Natasha tells Tony ‘we played this wrong.’
“Tony tells Natasha to run, which is what sends her to go into hiding with Steve Rogers and the rest of the Secret Avengers.”
If Marvel Studios decide to go with this, Downey Jr’s Black Widow cameo would presumably only be right at the beginning of the movie.
Certainly, using a deleted scene sounds much more likely than roping in Downey Jr again after his contract with the studio has ended.
However, it sounds like he could be providing his voice as Tony Stark for a Disney Plus series.
According to an alleged leak by We Got This Covered, Downey Jr will return as Iron Man’s voice for the Ironheart Disney Plus show.
Apparently, Tony Stark will be back in a voiceover capacity as the guiding A.I. of Ironheart’s suit.
Marvel comics fans will know this superhero as Riri Williams, a black teenage girl who takes on Iron Man’s mantle after he retires.
The source, who correctly revealed that Ewan McGregor would return as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Robert Pattinson would play Batman, claims Downey Jr will feature in Ironheart.
The star has previously backed Ironheart replacing his Iron Man in the MCU.
Downey Jr made the announcement at the Renaissance Gala at the Gene Siskel Film Centre in June.
A witness tweeted: “The real story here is that @RobertDowneyJr said publicly in a room full of people that #Ironheart should be in the MCU.”
They added: “I went straight back to the press area afterward and was like YOU ALL HEARD IT, WRITE THAT DOWN.”
Marvel Studios have promised a much more diverse line-up of superheroes from Phase 4 onwards, something that Ironheart fits in with very well.
The first three phases of the MCU were dominated by white male characters and so far the Disney Plus slate that’s been announced has been much more inclusive with shows like Ms Marvel and She-Hulk already confirmed. Perhaps Ironheart will be announced for Marvel Phase 5, which kicks off from 2022.
Black Widow is released in UK cinemas on May 1, 2020.
