Avengers Endgame 'EXTENDED version release confirmed' – in late bid for box office record
The Marvel all-star film will seemingly hit theatres again in slightly longer form; ahead of the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home.
This news comes just hours after director Anthony Russo was quoted as saying he wasn’t focussed on whether or not Avengers: Endgame eclipsed Avatar.
At time of writing, Endgame is just $45 million shy of the $2.79 billion global total achieved by James Cameron’s 2009 smash.
Feige is quoted as telling ComicBook.com: “We are doing that [an extended version].
“I don’t know if it’s been announced. And I don’t know how much.”
He clarified: “Yeah, we’re doing it next weekend.”
If this alludes to the weekend of June 29 and 30, it would position it perfectly ahead of Spider-Man: Far From Home, which gets its release on July 2.
How this will work – i.e. if the Russos have prepared an entire, longer cut of the movie; or if deleted clips will be shown separately – is not clear at this stage.
In any case, it’ll give fans a nice taster of the DVD and Blu-ray content, which should see the light of day later in the summer.
Speaking to MTV earlier this week, Russo had said he did not have eyes on the box office race.
“I know that it sounds very sensational and all, but I try not to focus on it,” he said.
“Because even if we don’t pass Avatar, there’s no way I want to have a shred of regret about anything associated with this movie.
“So I refuse to even consider it!”
Avengers: Infinity War topped out at $2.05 billion worldwide, making it the fifth highest-grossing movie ever.
Endgame has eclipsed that, as well as Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Titanic, in the two months since its release.
Interestingly – looking solely at US-only numbers – it seems unlikely to take the top spot from the Star Wars movie, which has made $937 million domestically to Endgame’s $831 million.
