Avengers Endgame: How THAT incredible all-star shot was made ‘It’s NOT stitched together’

WARNING: Major spoilers ahead for Avengers: Endgame.

The Marvel film’s climax sees Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) meeting a heroic end on the battlefield.

After taking the Infinity Stones back from Thanos, he himself executes a Snap – enabling him to rid the universe of the supervillain and his enormous army.

What follows is an almighty funeral scene, which brings together a huge number of stars from the Marvel roster.

It really is a stunning moment as a large number of characters are seen in one single shot.

In addition to the key players, we have the likes of superstar supporting actors Samuel L Jackson (Nick Fury), Marisa Tomei (Aunt May), Michelle Pfeiffer (Hope van Dyne), William Hurt (Thaddeus Ross), Linda Cardellini (Laura Barton), Michael Douglas (Hank Pym) and many, many more.

Even Ty Simpkins, who played Harley Keener in Iron Man 3, is there.

While fans may understandably assume that the actors filmed their appearances separately to each-other, it seems that’s not the case: the team really did get the megastars’ schedules to align for that one shot.

Speaking at a panel hosted by the Academy, producer Kevin Feige, writers Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus, and co-director Joe Russo discussed the making of the finale.

Feige said, when asked for his favourite moment in terms of the talent he got to work with: “The amazing shot that Joe and Anthony [Russo] did at the end at Tony’s funeral, that pushes past more cast members than you might have ever seen in one shot before…

“By the way, that’s the first time, publicly or privately, that I’ve ever called it the funeral.

“On the callsheets, in the script, it was called the wedding scene, and we still refer to it as the wedding. We shot it two years ago.”

Markus added: “It’s not stitched together, they were all there.”

Feehily credited the unit manager, line producer and first assistant director with getting “them all there on that day”.

Feige recalled: “They were all there on that front yard of that cabin and it was amazing. It was emotional for all of us.

“You had things like Tom Holland, who plays Spider-Man, coming up to me and going, ‘is that Michelle Pfeiffer over there? Is she in this?’, because we hadn’t released Ant-Man and the Wasp yet.

“That was an amazing day.”

Indeed, Sebastian Stan – who plays Bucky Barnes – said this week that the actors didn’t know what they were shooting when they turned up, confirming that they were told it was a “wedding”.

Endgame, which marks the culmination of 11 years in the MCU, has broken multiple records since its release, and is already the sixth biggest film of all time after little over a week.

Avengers: Endgame is out now.
