Avengers Endgame: Is EVERYTHING we know about Avengers 4 WRONG?
Avengers: Endgame has been the subject of fan speculation since the closing moments of Avengers: Infinity War. Back then, fans had little to go on but their own wild theories and conjecture. Now with a title and multiple trailers out there, fans have felt secure in their knowledge of what’s to come.
But is everything we know about Avengers Endgame wrong?
According to Anthony Russo, co-director of Avengers: Endgame, what fans have gleaned from the trailers may be misleading at best, and flat out wrong at worst.
Speaking to the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Russo said: “We look at the trailer as a very different experience from the movie.
“Audiences are so predictive now that you have to be very smart about how you craft a trailer because an audience can watch a trailer and basically tell you what’s going to happen in the film.”
“We consume too much content. So at our disposal are lots of different shots that aren’t in the movie that we can manipulate through CG to tell a story that we want to tell specifically for the purpose of the trailer and not for the film.”
There are many examples of the Russo Brothers using fake scenes to titillate fans and ultimately lead them astray.
In the Thor: Ragnarok trailer, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) was shown with both his eyes in tact, and no scar.
This alteration was to keep a spoiler under wraps – that he lost an eye.
Avengers: Infinity War perhaps had the biggest fake trailer of them all.
AVENGERS ENDGAME LEAK: NEBULA ACTRESS KAREN GILLAN LETS SLIP SPOILER
During a particularly moving scene, the Avengers are charging through the Wakandan landscape.
The heroes assembled are Black Panther, Captain America, and the Hulk.
But that shot was not in the movie at all.
In fact, the Hulk was barely in Infinity War save for the first few minutes on the Asgardian refugee ship.
AVENGERS ENDGAME TIMELINE: THE FILMS YOU NEED TO SEE BEFORE AVENGERS 4
The inclusion of Hulk in the battle scene was to disguise a character arc point for Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo).
Armed with this information, it is not improbable to assume the Russo brothers have done the same with Avengers: Endgame.
Joe Russo, the other co-director of Avengers: Endgame, told Empire: “When I was a kid and saw The Empire Strikes Back at 11am on the day it opened, it so profoundly moved me because I didn’t know a damn thing about the story I was going to watch.”
In an attempt to preserve the same sense of wonderment, Russo told Empire he and his brother spoke to Marvel about “all scales of marketing.”
Presumably, this means trailers as well as posters and standees.
With a recent leak of Endgame footage, fans have been particularly vocal about not spoiling the ending of the final instalment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase Three.
It is not too big of a leap to assume the Russo brothers have taken extra precautions, even with their trailers, to keep the movie’s plot a secret.
Avengers: Endgame is out in UK cinemas on Thursday, April 25, 2019.
