Avengers Endgame: Is THIS what happened to alternate Captain America?

During the time heist of Avengers Endgame, Captain America managed to con Hydra out of Loki’s Scepter containing the Mind Stone. Except, on his way back to rendezvous with Iron Man and Ant-Man, he comes across his 2012-self. The younger, alternate version of Cap believes his older self to be Loki in disguise with the Scepter. Older Cap has to battle him and manages to put his younger self to sleep with the Mind Stone before continuing with the time heist.

But considering how the Avengers Endgame screenwriters and directors have explained the time travel in this movie, this isn’t just Cap’s younger self, but an alternate version of him from a newly created timeline.

After all, Hulk explained how you cannot change the past as it becomes your present.

So just what happened to the other Cap in this alternate reality?

Well, we know that 2023 Cap returned the Time, Space and Mind stones to 2012 New York.

Presumably, he gave it back to Hydra before the Avengers obtained it in Age of Ultron.

But surely younger Cap is still in a trance of obedience to his older self.

Knowing Cap’s character, fans would hope he’d release his alternate self from this burden.

Even so, another question remains – surely this other Cap never went back in time to live with Peggy?

After all, the Thanos from this younger Cap’s timeline travelled from the alternate 2014 to the main timeline’s 2023 and died there.

This means there was no Snap in the other timeline and Iron Man and Black Widow will have survived.

So presumably, Cap will have lived on in the present too and not returned to his life with Peggy.
