Avengers Endgame: Robert Downey Jr SPEAKS OUT on Iron Man death and character development

Downey Jr continued: “It started off with someone who is absolutely self-centred, has more money than they could ever spend, is spiritually dead and has no idea that they’re about to go through a crucible that is going to put them in a position to be of service to their community. Boom!”

“Then by the end of it, the last suit he has isn’t even designed for him to be able to survive using it.

“The first suit [in Iron Man] is all about, ‘Will this get me and my ego and my precious physical frame out of this cave I’m in and into the desert where maybe the calvary can come get me and bring me back to my stupid life?’”

“The last one [in Avengers Endgame] is not designed to be able to do its job and have you make it past this.”

The actor added: “So that’s the great Joseph Campbell mythology of ultimately you go from refusing the call of being a serendipitous hero and by the end you’re willing to give the ultimate sacrifice –your life – despite your family and your grounded-ness and your desire to not want to do that so your community can thrive.”

Meanwhile, Downey Jr is set to have made a nine-figure sum for both Avengers Infinity War and Avengers Endgame.

According to Forbes, the star made $75 million on the previous and had an upfront salary as high as $20 million for the latter.

But then for Endgame, Downey Jr is said to have had 8% in back-end profits from the box office, matching his earnings on the previous outing.

The actor has also been calling on fans to go and see the Avengers Endgame re-release.

The Marvel epic is now just $7.2 million away from topping Avatar’s record as the highest-grossing movie of all time.

To give the film that extra nudge, Marvel Studios re-released Avengers Endgame with bonus content after the end credits.

This included an introduction from directors Joe and Anthony Russo, a Stan Lee tribute, an unfinished Hulk deleted scene and the opening of Spider-Man Far From Home.
