Avengers Endgame screenwriters reveal why [SPOILER] had a funeral and [SPOILER] did NOT

WARNING SPOILERS FOR AVENGERS ENDGAME AHEAD. A happy ending sometimes comes at a great cost. And for Avengers Endgame that meant the deaths of Black Widow and Iron Man. However, only Tony Stark had a funeral attended by everyone else, while Natasha’s corpse was left in 2014 on Vormir, after she was sacrificed for the Soul Stone.

Now Avengers Endgame screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have revealed why only Iron Man had a funeral.

Speaking with The New York Times, they said: “Tony gets a funeral. Natasha doesn’t.

“That’s partly because Tony’s this massive public figure and she’s been a cipher the whole time.

“It wasn’t necessarily honest to the character to give her a funeral.”

They added: “In a way, he has been the mirror of Steve Rogers the entire time.

“Steve is moving toward some sort of enlightened self-interest, and Tony’s moving to selflessness. They both get to their endpoints.”

This certainly rings true considering Steve’s selfless, heroic beginnings in Captain America: The First Avenger and Tony’s selfish and arrogant start in Iron Man. Of course, Cap didn’t end where Tony started but landed on an earned and good self-interest.
