Avengers Infinity War end credits: Nick Fury call – who does he phone?

Avengers Infinity War brought destruction and heartbreak to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a way we haven’t seen in the MCU.

Thanos’ hunt for the six infinity stones comes to a climactic and shocking end, resulting in a massacre of terrible consequences. 

Marvel fans are banding together to figure out what the post-credits scene means and how it will impact the rest of the MCU.

As all hope is lost, Nick Fury calls upon a special friend to help save the universe, but who did he call?

What happened in the post-credits scene?

Marvel fans have come to expect at least one post-credits scene from Marvel’s films to tease what could happen in the future and Avengers: Infinity War delivered in a small but not insignificant scene.

All hope for our Avengers was lost as Thanos finally collected all six infinity stones – seeing the Mad Titan click his fingers and wiping half the universe from existence. 

First seen in the Infinity Gauntlet comic series, Thanos annihilates half of all life in a second, in the hope of bringing in a new dawn for the cosmos. 

The mad titan had threatened to do so on his home planet Titan but later vowed to gain the power to complete his goal on a universal scale. 

Bucky Barnes, Spider-Man, Black Panther, Scarlet Witch, and a slew of other heroes are wiped from existence, leaving a rag-tag group to suffer the consequences and clean up the mess.

A post credits scene shows the fallout of Thanos’ actions, as Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) desperately try to figure out what is going on.

After becoming involved in a car crash, Fury grabs a retro pager-looking device from the back of his car and activates it, seconds before crumbling to dust.

The pager beeps slowly before a bright flash of blue, red and gold flashes on the screen with a white insignia on the front. Who could this mysterious hero be? 

Could she be the answer to the Avengers problems?

Who does Nick Fury call? 

Speculation over who Fury calls has been whirling online, but comic book fans will know that the insignia represents Captain Marvel, one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel universe. 

Captain Marvel, or Carol Danvers, is an ex-pilot from earth who gains superhuman powers from a Kree alien race. She has enhanced endurance, strength, speed, the ability to fly and is capable of existing in space.

The fact that Fury calls on Captain Marvel in his last moments alive gives credit to the idea that Danvers is the saviour of the universe. 

A Captain Marvel film is scheduled for March 2019, just two months before Avengers 4, with many fans expecting this film and 2018’s Ant-Man sequel to build up to the final battle between the Avengers and Thanos. 

Captain Marvel will be played by Brie Larson in her solo film, with leaked images revealing the colour of the superhero suit. Can Captain Marvel save the universe and reunite the Avengers to defeat Thanos?

Marvel Studios will be confident that these next few films will be a success, given the huge amount of money Infinity War is currently making. 

The movie has now secured the highest grossing opening weekend of any film ever, raking in more than $1.6 billion worldwide. 

This now makes it the most successful Marvel film and the fifth most successful movie of all time.

Put into perspective, 2017’s Justice league managed to make $650 million in its total cinema runtime.

The impressive figures are sure to make Marvel president Kevin Feige sure of success as we inch closer to Avengers 4.
